If you want to make all the difference in the world for the success of your home improvement project then the place you need to begin is with a solid plan. Proper planning is often the difference between success and failure in all aspects of life. It definitely holds true when it comes to home improvement projects. Here are just a few of the ways you can make sure your plan is a solid one.
Use Pictures to Tell the Tale
A picture is worth a thousand words. Have a picture of what your finished project will look like. An actual, physical picture. It doesn't matter if it's a finished sketch or a composite photograph that is made by using various features you appreciate in magazines, books, and/or from the Internet. The bottom line is that you need to know what the ultimate goal for the room is AND know that you're both on the same page.
It's hard to have a good plan if you both have a different final product in mind. That's why the actual picture is so important. Some people are great at visualization. They can see the finished product from the descriptive words alone. Other people cannot. You can't possibly know if you have the same vision in mind if you can't both see a picture of it and agree that this photograph is what you want – collectively.
Count Your Pennies
Not only do you need to count the pennies you have in order to complete the project. You must also count the pennies of every item you are going to need to buy in order to get the job done. It's unbelievably EASY to overspend on a home improvement project.
It's easy to forget all the little things like nuts, bolts, screws, glue, and tools that are often necessary in order to get the job done. Don't forget things like paint brushes, primer, drop cloths, paint stirrers, roller brushes, etc. Even painting projects can add up to a few unexpected expenses. It's important to have an accurate idea of all the things you'll need in order to make your project a success (not to mention how much these "little things" cost).
Understand Your Limitations
We all would love to be able to "get r done" in a day. But remember, Rome wasn't built in a day – or even a three-day weekend when you get down to it. It takes time to make your home look picture perfect. If you push yourself to finish in a specific time frame you might overlook important safety issues or even make a small problem bigger.
Accept that you need little things like sleep in order to function. There's no amount of caffeine in the world that can make up for the sleep that can be lost during home improvement marathons. There's no need to do that to yourself.
Almost everyone, even seasoned professional contractors, underestimates the amount of time it will take to complete a project because they overlook the human condition and don't account for sickness, interruptions, distractions, and other events that shave precious minutes, hours, and even days off their productivity.
When you plan with these things in mind your home improvement project is much more likely to be a raving success. That's good news for your project and your marriage. If you make a few mistakes along the way it can take a heavy toll on the state of marital bliss you're experiencing. However, all is not lost even if your spouse walks away. At least it isn't if you have a solid plan like the one in this FREE video on
