My boyfriend left me and now I feel like I'm drowning in pain over our breakup. How do I cope with the pain so that I can just make it through the days ahead of me? I'm a mess. I can barely force myself to get out of bed and everything just seems to get harder as the days go by. How long is this emptiness inside of me going to last? When will the pain go away?

These are all questions and feelings that are quite common immediately after a breakup. They aren't fun emotions to experience by any means but they are fairly common. In the first few days after a breakup it feels like your world will never be right again.

Depending on how long the relationship lasted, it could take a while to really get your bearings so that you can figure out what you want from life and the direction you'd like to take to get there. Life after a relationship can be very cruel so avoid making any major decisions until you feel like you've gotten your sea legs under you a bit.

Here are a few things you can do that will help you cope with the depression and sadness that seem so overwhelming after your boyfriend has broken up with you.


1) Find a physical and/or creative way to vent the emotions you're feeling. Bottling up emotions at a time like this can be very detrimental to the recovery process. Take out your frustrations, hurt, and anger on your pillows, join a gym and go for kick boxing, or pour out your heart into music, art, or poetry. Finding outlets for your emotions gives you a way to work them out of your system one day at a time and can be an important tool in the recovery process.

2) Do good things for other people. You don't have to join some charity program or build houses for strangers but there are many good things you can do for people in your family, neighborhood, and community that will help you find healing for yourself. There is nothing that compares with seeing the needs and suffering of others to help you put your own into perspective. Your heart may be breaking now because he left but doing something good for others will help you put it back together again and fill it up with a different kind of love and a sense of purpose.


These are just two small steps that can make a big difference in your life as you try to cope with the aftermath of a breakup.
