Steady as a rock has probably been the way you would have described your boyfriend in the past. His actions were usually as predictable as the days of the week and when they will fall. But suddenly, he's started saying hurtful things, staying out all hours of the night, and picking fights for no obvious reason. Are these signs that he's getting ready to leave? Does he want to break up with me?

It's hard to wonder about the motivations of the man you love. Sudden behavior shifts can be quite frightening – especially if you've been together for quite a while and know him well. There are several possible explanations for the sudden changes in behavior and you should consider them all before you let his actions right now cause you to break up with him.

1) Medical conditions that alter personality. There are quite a few of these and most of them are not at all good. The first thing you need to do is talk to friends and family and see if others are seeing odd behavior patterns in him or if the mood change seems to be limited to times when you're around. If everyone is noticing something not quite right then you need to push, pull, or drag him to the doctor for a full workup no matter how many insults he hurls your way in the process.

2) He could be trying to get you to break up with him. Guys do this for a number of reasons. Some of them just don't want to be seen as the bad buy even though they know their feelings have changed. Then there are some guys who reach a point where they feel they don't deserve you and set out to prove to you and themselves that they really don't. Don’t let him put you both through that kind of pain unnecessarily. Nip it in the bud (as Barney would say).
3) He's seeing someone else and comparing you to her. This is fairly common. He feels guilty and is looking for ways to justify his bad behavior by picking fights and finding fault with you. It's not pleasant and not at all healthy for your relationship. Only you can decide if it's enough to end your relationship or if you're going to call him on it and stand by your man to work things out.

It isn't always easy to see the real reasons for this odd behavior at first but you need to figure it out fast before you take drastic action that will leave you looking for ways to get your ex back before too long. Don't let a good man go if you don't have to. It's still possible to save your relationship at this point you just have to be willing to work through the rocky roads ahead.
