Your may feel as though your marriage has been shattered into a million pieces when you find out that your spouse has been having an affair. There's nothing EASY about recovering from an affair. What you can do though, if you'd really like to salvage what remains of your marriage, is pick up the millions of pieces laying around and put them back into place, one by one.

When you first look at the big picture and all the pieces on the floor it might seem like a task that is just too big. You can't even begin trying to take it all in. It's too enormous for your mind to handle.

So…

Here's what you do instead.

Create Boundaries

You try to find the edges. You create the outline of your marriage and leave the middle in a bit of disarray until you get a clear picture of what the boundaries are and what the edges look like.

Boundaries are good in marriages. All relationships benefit from boundaries just like puzzles. You need the hard edge and the knowledge that everyone has limits but you need the freedom on the inside to twist, turn, and work the pieces into place so that everything is able to fit neatly within those boundaries in the end.

Group Common Pieces

When working on the big picture puzzle that is your marriage you'll find that there are bright and dark spots within your marriage. All marriages have them. There are ups and downs and that's not necessarily a bad thing. You want to have more ups than downs of course but it's all of the shades of light and dark together that make the picture so beautiful once it's put back together.

Group the lights and the darks according to where they belong in the puzzle. You can generally count on the purples being close together along with the rights, whites, blues, and greens. Group the pieces that make your marriage so beautiful into areas where they can be more easily recognized for what they are and placed properly according need.

You know what needs to be worked on most in your marriage. As you begin to dig into things and put the pieces into place you may find a few other strengths and weaknesses you may not have recognized before. Learn to appreciate them both for the lessons they can teach if you really do want to save your marriage .

No matter what, you have to do something while recovering from an affair to put your marriage back together. Otherwise you may as well skip all the stuff in the middle and go straight to work looking for ways to get your ex back instead.
