Guilt is a dangerous thing. If you aren't careful it will eat you up inside. There are times in life when perhaps a small dose of guilt can do the body good but for there is no reason to be consumed by guilt about cheating when there are other options like working to save your marriage that could consume you instead.

Figuring out how to save your marriage after cheating is a far more productive use of your time than allowing guilt to take over your every waking thought. The odd thing is that people become attached to their guilt. They wear it like armor without every realizing that this protective shield is the one thing that is really destroying them from the inside out. Do not let this be how the story of your marriage ends.

There is a huge difference between accepting responsibility and adding a new layer of guilt to your armor. So the time is now to STOP feeling guilty. 1) Stop trying to force yourself to "pay" for your mistakes. Granted, cheating on your spouse was a big mistake but it doesn't have to end your marriage. If you allow guilt to take over the outcome is far bleaker than if you turn your attention towards methods that will save your marriage instead.

2) Stop living in the past. Forgive yourself. Forgive your partner. Move out of the past and face the future together instead. The more time you spend focusing in the future the less time you'll have left over to wallow in the past. There is no reason to keep paying an emotional debt that most others (including the spouse most harmed by the act) have moved beyond.

3) Embrace your humanity and understand that you'll make plenty more mistakes before all is said and done. Once you learn to accept your mistakes and learn from them rather than kicking yourself to next Sunday and back because of them, you'll be a happier person and have a much happier marriage. Try it out for yourself and see what a difference it can make with the little and big mistakes alike.

You don't have to change the world to get your ex back after cheating but you'll have much greater success if your change your mind about the guilt you've been carrying around.
